The School of Pure and Applied Natural Sciences at the University of Kalmar seeks a PhD student in
microbiology. The School of Pure and Applied Natural Sciences is part of the Faculty of Natural Science and Engineering. The research activities within this multidisciplinary school are grouped into five Research Centres.
The research project is financed by the EU and the Swedish Science Foundation and concerns the response of bacteria and viruses to food web cascading effects elicited by the invasive jellyfish Mnemiopsis leidyi.
Mnemiopsis, notorious for wrecking havoc on the Black Sea, was recently introduced to the Baltic, where it thrives. As an enclosed brackish water system where many organisms live close to their tolerance thresholds the Baltic is very sensitive to such disturbances. The EU project (7 partners from the Nordic countries) aims to test the overall hypothesis that Mnemiopsis in the Baltic Sea causes cascading effects throughout the pelagic food web, from gelatinous and top predators to microbes. The PhD project is focused on effects on viruses and bacteria and involves a great deal of molecular methods for analyses of viral (e.g. whole genome profiling) and bacterial community composition (e.g., denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, cloning, sequencing, 454 pyrosequencing, fluorescent in situ hybridization). Some elements of bioinformatics will be included. The project will also include methods for analysis of bacterial activity. Participation in research cruises and large-scale experiments is scheduled. The topic of the PhD project is marine biology with focus on marine microbial ecology. Microbiological and molecular methods will be used in connection with laboratory work, collaborative experiments and cruises on the Baltic Sea.
Applicants should have a Bachelor or a Master degree in a subject area of relevance for the present project. The previous university education shall include an advanced course corresponding to at least 10 weeks of studies in a subject relevant to the post-graduate studies. Experience with
microbiology and molecular biology are considered favourable for the position. Proficiency in English, oral and written, is an absolute requirement. Basic prerequisites are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 7. You will be employed as a doctoral student (Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5). Employment will be executed under the condition that funding is acquired as anticipated.
