This PhD student position is an opportunity for an ambitious person to dive into a rapidly developing research field. You are interested in how microbial communities function and how we can use them in environmental engineering processes. You like spending time in front of the computer doing programming and bioinformatics, and learning new methods to analyze and visualize data. You also like spending time in the lab, setting up experiments to test hypotheses, and you are not afraid to get your hands dirty (both literally and metaphorically).

Information about the research and division
The research project is about phages in anaerobic digestion. The anaerobic digestion process is commonly used at wastewater treatment plants to convert sewage sludge into biogas. The process is accomplished by a complex microbial communitie. As a PhD student you will analyze the microbial communities in various types of reactors, with a specific focus on phages.

The project will be carried out at the division Water Environment Technology (WET), Dept. of Architecture and Civil Engineering. As a doctoral student, you will be part of the wastewater treatment and resource recovery research area. We conduct research on biotechnologies for more efficient treatment and resource recovery from waste streams. Our research spans from microbial ecology theory to process engineering. We develop new biotechnological processes and we investigate the fundamental science behind these processes. Examples of research areas where we have projects are anammox, fermentation, microbial electrochemistry, aerobic granular sludge, and moving bed biofilm processes. Often, our projects are carried out in cooperation with municipalities, R&D companies, and consultants.

Major responsibilities
In this project, you will collaborate with wastewater treatment plants where you will collect samples from their full scale anaerobic digesters. You will also carry out experiments in the laboratory to test specific hypotheses that you develop during the project. You will use various molecular biology methods, omics methods, and bioinformatics to analyze microbial communities in anaerobic digestion, specifically focusing on phages and their interactions with bacteria and archaea.

Qualifications
You have a Master degree in environmental engineering, biotechnology, or another relevant field. You are an independent, analytical, and creative person, and you have a passion for research. Examples of relevant skills for the position include programming experience, for example in Python or R; laboratory experience; process engineering knowledge; and knowledge about bioinformatics methods.

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
