We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting challenges of today. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!
Pursue a PhD to use computation in guiding the synthesis of novel organic materials for future molecular electronics.

Your work assignments
Your task will be to computationally study chemical reactions on surfaces, contributing to the development of low-dimensional carbon-based materials for semiconductor technologies. The primary methodological framework will be density functional theory, in combination with high-throughput computational screening, which requires efficient handling and analysis of large datasets. To facilitate data analysis and workflow automation, you will develop and refine code for pre- and post-processing.

You will be part of a collaborative research team while maintaining responsibility for your individual research projects. We regularly publish in highly ranked scientific journals, and your work is expected to result in such publications. Additionally, you will engage in national and international collaborations, offering opportunities for networking and interdisciplinary exchange.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master's level in physics, chemistry, materials science, or related field or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in computational physics/chemistry, surface science, condensed matter physics, materials science, or related subjects. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Experience of computational modeling, programming in Python and experience of Linux operating systems is considered to be an advantage, though not a strict requirement.

Strong communication and collaboration skills are required, as well as proficiency in spoken and written English.

You are self-motivated, proactive, and capable of working independently, with a strong curiosity and drive to contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge, while working in a structured and methodological way.

A letter of intent should be attached to the application and is expected to include: (i) a motivation for why the applicant wishes to pursue a PhD, (ii) what specifically attracted the applicant to this position, (iii) a description of the experiences deemed relevant to the position, and (iv) an explanation of how the applicant's background, such as education, is relevant to the position in question.

Your workplace

The Materials Theory Unit, within the Materials Design Division, carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education within materials science and surface chemistry, with a strong focus on predicting synthesis pathways for novel materials.

The employment

When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years' full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan.
