Your work assignments
Within the competence center NEXT, we are looking for a PhD student at Linköping University (LiU) in the field of materials science who is interested in working with the innovative characterization methods enabled by large-scale synchrotron and neutron facilities. Supplementary work will be carried out in laboratories at LiU.
The NEXT Competence Center has 24 partners from academia, research institutes, companies and infrastructures to jointly work within research on innovative materials engineering solutions for current industrial sustainability challenges, for instance, research related to electrification of the transport sector, sustainable manufacturing via additive manufacturing (3D printing) and development of experimental methodology and analysis for effective evaluation of advanced high-throughput experiments. More information about the Competence Center NEXT can be found here:
https://www.next.kth.se/In this specific project, you will study hard, wear resistant coatings that are used on tools for metal cutting. You will use x-ray-based methods such as high-energy x-ray diffraction to study the coatings in real-time as they are used for metal cutting. You will also use techniques such as electron microscopy and lab-scale x-ray diffraction to study wear and microstructural changes. The aim is to form a detailed understanding of the material behavior in the contact zone between the tool and the chip and how this relates to different wear mechanisms.
As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.
Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master's level in Physics, Materials Science, or Materials Chemistry or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in Physics, Materials Science, or Materials Chemistry. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.
You speak and write English fluently.
Experience in hard coatings, x-ray diffraction and/or the use of synchrotron radiation is considered a merit.
You do not need to supply a letter of intent with your application.
Your workplace
The Nanostructured Materials division at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education within Materials Science. More information about Nanostructured Materials can be found here:
