The research activities within this multidisciplinary school are grouped into five Research Centres, including the Environmental Science and Technology Research Centre (EST). The research group in Palaeocology is part of EST. School now seeks a PhD student in Late Quaternay Palaeoecology (Environmental Science), with focus on land climate relationsships. The research will be carried out at the Palaeoecological Laboratory of the School, which offers a stimulating environment with all necessary equipment for high quality palaeoecological research and expertise within pollen, plant macrofossil, charcoal and insect analysis as well as pollen-vegetation modelling.
The research will focus on land cover-climate relationships, in particular on reconstruction of past land cover at the large spatial scale in Europe in formats required for climate and vegetation models. The methods will include field work, pollen analysis, application of the REVEALS model, and production of vegetation maps with GIS techniques. Collaboration with climate and vegetation modellers will be essential.
Basic requirements for post-graduate studies are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen) Chapter 7. Applicants should have a Masters Degree (240hp/240ECTS) in a subject area of relevance for the present project, i.e. Quaternary Geology especially Late Quaternary vegitation and climate history. Skills in numerical analyses and GIS techniques are a clear advantage. The quality of the undergraduate thesis, and skills in written and spoken English will have significant impact in the selection procedure. Successful completion of the post-graduate studies will lead to a PhD in Environmental Science, especially Late Quaternary Palaeoecology. The PhD studies are limited to 4 years (100%) but may be extended to 5 years through other activities. During the first year of the studies you will receive a study scholarship (â€?utbildningsbidragâ€?).
