1 PhD student in the research education subject: Forest management
Stump and slash harvest effects on vegetation, natural regeneration, seedling establishment, and forest production
A full time PhD student position is available at the Department of forest ecology and management, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Umeå, Sweden. The wood fuel market in Sweden is currently growing with 3 TWh per year equivalent to 1.5 million solid cubic meters of wood. This growing demand is currently met by harvesting logging residues following stemwood harvest. Due to current market growth also stumps are considered as an option to meet the market demand. This has raised questions about the long-term sustainability with this increased harvest intensity. Primary issues include forest production, carbon balance, biodiversity, soil acidification, and surface water quality. In this applied PhD project an old long-term field experiment with stump and slash harvest distributed over Sweden, established by Lars Kardell during the 1970s, will be used to answer questions about short- to mid-term effects on vegetation, natural regeneration, seedling establishment, and forest production. The PhD work will primarily be based on already collected data and complementary data collected in the field. The department offers an international environment and a broad competence within its competence areas ecophysiology, forest regeneration, forest growth & yield, silviculture, tropical forestry, forest history, forest vegetation ecology, forest landscape biogeochemistry and forest soils. This is a warrant for wider discussions and perspectives on boreal and temperate forests and forestry that will become useful during the project and after graduation irrespective if the future plans of the student will be to continue with research or in other parts of the forest sector.

www.slu.se/ny-doktorandA MSc (or equivalent) in forestry or biology including credits in forest ecology and/or forestry. Credits in forest production, forest regeneration, silviculture, plant physiology, forest vegetation ecology, forest soils, and statistics is a merit. Additional requirements for this position include excellent communication, reading, and writing skills in English and preferably also in Swedish. Other important qualifications include ability to read and value scientific papers, plan and carry out i.e. fieldwork, statistical analyses, scientific writing, in collaboration with supervisors and co-workers. Personal characteristics that will help in this are curiosity, inquisitiveness, the ability to work with other people, and to create networks. The selection will be based on the written application, CV, master thesis (or equivalent), personal references, good knowledge in English, and an interview. Driving license is an advantage.
