We are searching for a doctoral candidate eager to take part in crossdisciplinarity work within battery technology for a sustainable future. This work will compose both theoretical and experimental work. A model is to be developed to estimate the material mass breakdown for various cell designs and cell formats. The model will be validated from teardown analysis of commercial lithium-ion battery cells.

Reference number: 20250273

Application deadline: August 10, 2025

Project overview

This 5-year PhD project aims to develop a flexible and general model that enables comparison between different lithium-ion battery cell chemistries, formats, and design alternatives. The model can be used to support lifecycle assessment studies and to guide the selection of cells for various applications.

Key tasks include:

• Developing the model using open-source Python software
• Planning and conducting experiments
• Analysing teardown reports and experimental data
• Validating and improving the model
• Publishing results in scientific journals and presenting at conferences

You will receive support from both academic supervisors and industrial partners throughout the project. Approximately 20% of your time will be allocated to departmental duties, including teaching and lab assistance.
