1 PhD student in the research education subject: Fish welfare
Aquaculture with focus on fish welfare
At the department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies, the domestication process of fish, based on ecological, physiological and genetic studies has long been a central research theme. Feeding schedules, selective breeding, production models, fish wellfare as well as evaluation of the environmental impact from fish farms are some applied research topics related to fish farming we study. We cooperate with other departments at SLU and do up to date research on new fish food sources and its effect on the wellbeing of fish and quality of the fish for human consumption. We do studies on species potentially relevant for Swedish fish farming: Arctic charr, rainbow trout, Atlantic salmon, perch, pikeperch and grayling. Sustainable fish farming is our future focus and therefore we hope to recruit a new Ph.D-student into this field. The aim of this PhD-project is to cover a topic relevant to intensive and sustainable fish farming, dealing with welfare, handling, and transport, as well as more general effects of new feed sources. We have access to two laboratories suitable for behavioural research as well as small scale feeding trials. As a part of the project the behavioral lab will be expanded and include a special section for physiological studies utilizing techniques as cannulation etc. One laboratory has an advanced water heating system and is equipped for control of light and temperature conditions. We have access to a DNA lab as well as instruments for analysis of body composition (MIT-fish analyzer) and a swim tunnel for measuring respiration and swimming performance as well as facilities for large-scale farming trials. Studies can also be performed on fish from our selective breeding programme on Arctic charr which has been going on for seven generations and has documented pedigrees. The subject of aquaculture is presently expanding rapidly at SLU including both research and teaching. SLU has together with Nordic partners gained support to initiate a Nordic MSc in Aquaculture. The candidate is expected to participate and assist in the development of course curriculum, teaching and course administration at an activity level of 25%.
Qualifications
A suitable background is a MSc in biology, including aquaculture. Also experience of teaching administration, at least at a course level is also recommended. Experience of physiological research in fish, and then in particular cannulation is a definite advantage. Candidates should have demonstrated evidence of good skills in the English language and a willingness to work in a team. The position includes interaction with Swedish fish farmer and knowledge in Swedish will facilitate this. The candidate will therefore be expected to participate in languish courses if necessary.
