PhD student position in drone-based measurements of greenhouse gases from aquatic environments
Your work assignments
Do you want to contribute to future methods for understanding climate change? We are looking for a PhD student who wants to work on drone-based methods for measuring greenhouse gas emissions from shorelines of lakes.
As a PhD student you would be part of a competent, open, and welcoming research group at Linköping University. Here, researchers with diverse background work - both engineers and scientists - and we value diversity in experiences and perspectives. Together we develop and use new methods for environmental research, in close collaboration with other universities.
The project RELITORATE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, focus on the shorelines of lakes (littoral zones) - areas with abundant growth of aquatic plants that can both store large amounts of carbon and emit greenhouse gases. Within the project a team of experts in flux measurements, remote sensing, and numerical modelling, will use new methods to gain a better understanding of the role of littoral zones for climate change.
Your work will include:
• measurements of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O) using drones
• development of the drone method both in field and through data processing (calculations, programming, visualization in 2D and 3D)
• comparison with other methods on different scales
• field work at several sites in Sweden during different seasons
The work will consist of both collaboration and independent research. You will write scientific articles, present results at conferences, and participate in research education. Work can include institutional tasks such as teaching (up to 20%).
Your qualifications
We are looking for candidates with an engineering education or a background in natural sciences. You hold a master's degree in, for example, environmental engineering, physics, meteorology, biology, environmental science, or a relevant engineering field, e.g. connected to aerospace, drones, or electronics. Alternatively, you may have completed courses totaling at least 240 credits, including a minimum of 60 credits which must be on an advanced level, or have otherwise acquired essentially equivalent knowledge. Both engineers and candidates with a natural science background are welcome to apply.
We value motivation, curiosity, and the ability to take responsibility for your own work, while also enjoying collaboration. Good command of English, both spoken and written, is required. Since the position involves extensive fieldwork under varying conditions, a driving license (class B) is necessary.
Other qualifications adding merit value:
• an interest in technology and problem solving
• knowledge of sensor technology and electronics, including resolving simple technical problems
• experience in flying drones
• experience in calculations, modelling, or data visualization
• knowledge of statistical methods
• experience in programming (e.g. Matlab and/or Python)
• experience in fieldwork
• proficiency in scientific writing
Your workplace
Environmental Change carries out research and education on the interaction between environment and society in an analytically innovative way. Third cycle and first cycle studies specialising in environmental science are carried out at the department. First cycle studies include a bachelor's and a master's programme, as well as stand-alone courses and teacher-training courses in environment science, thematic natural science and geography.
This position is part of a group that focuses on greenhouse gas emissions from different anthropogenic and natural environments using several methods, some of which have been developed in the group.
The employment
