PhD Student in Environmental Science & Technology with special emphasis in Utilizing Microorganisms for Metal Recovery From Mining Operations, ref PA 2011/484

The School of Natural Sciences is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The research activities within this multidisciplinary school include the areas of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Organic Chemistry, Marine Ecology and Microbiology.
Project title: Bioelectrochemical systems for metal production, recycling, and remediation
The research project: This is a collaborative EU project proposing a sustainable alternative for metal recovery, recycling, and remediation using microorganisms.
Applicants should have a minimum of a good undergraduate degree although candidates with a Masters Degree (240hp/240ECTS) or corresponding experience would be at an advantage. Documented evidence of research in microbial fuel cells, acidophile microbiology, or biofilms would also be an advantage. Basic requirements for post-graduate studies are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 7.
The PhD studies are limited to 4 years (100%) but may be extended to 5 years through teaching at the undergraduate level. The starting date for the PhD education will be in autumn 2011. The position is located in Kalmar.
