RISE Research Institutes of Sweden is Sweden's research institute and innovation partner.

In international collaboration with companies, academia and the public sector, we contribute to a competitive business sector and a sustainable society. Our 3 000 employees drive and support all types of innovation processes. RISE is an independent, state-owned research institute that offers unique expertise and a hundred test and demonstration environments for future-proof technologies, products and services.

The vehicle and surface protection unit situated in Kista, Stockholm, consists of 16 colleagues and has two different main directions, vehicle corrosion and surface protection.

About the role
Additive Manufacturing (AM) presents an opportunity for developing economic eco-friendly metal products with enhanced long-lasting performance. Metal AM covers a wide range of technologies where a three-dimensional metallic component is manufactured by adding layer-upon-layer of material, also better-known as 3D printing. AM technology builds on the rational use of raw materials (through optimized product design and re-use of feedstock, reduced use of chemicals and lowered waste of resources), increased energy efficiency (by decreasing post-processing and assembly efforts), economic savings (reduced labour, storage and logistics, and little need for multi-assemblies), and faster processing times.

The focus of the position is the challenging topic of atmospheric and fatigue corrosion, including hydrogen embrittlement (HE), of duplex steel alloys in marine applications. Work will include aspect on the fabrication of the samples as well as exposure and full characterization of the samples to various laboratory scale atmospheric marine corrosion tests at RISE, and fatigue corrosion tests combined with local electrochemical analyses for hydrogen embrittlement and surface analysis after H-testing.

The PhD student will be part of a doctoral network on AM that is financed through a grant from EU (MSCA doctoral network Duramat). The doctoral degree will be delivered by the University of Brussels (VUB , Belgium). The work will be supervised by Docent Dominique Thierry (RISE) and Prof Iris De Graeve (VUB).

Eligibility
Researchers funded by MSCA Doctoral Networks need to fully satisfy the following criteria:

Cannot have a doctoral degree at the date of their recruitment. Be an early stage researcher as a doctoral candidate (DC). DCs are those who are, at the time of recruitment by the host, in the first four years (full- time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which formally entitles them to embark on a doctorate. Have a master's degree (or obtaining a degree before end of February 2024) granting access to doctorate studies. The degrees required for the various positions are all on the scientific master level: material science, metallurgy, chemistry, physics, computational modelling / A.I. of materials, or related fields in science, are all relevant disciplines. Not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. English language: Network DCs must demonstrate that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the network training.

Who are you?
In addition to the formal eligibility requirements the selection will also be based on the relevance of prior knowledge in one or several of the following topics:

- - Corrosion of AM materials
- - Hydrogen embrittlement
- - Mechanical testing (e.g. stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen embrittlement, fatigue corrosion...)

Personal qualities such as cooperativeness, initiative and suitability for doctoral studies will be weighed against formal subject knowledge. A brief description of the applicant's visions and goals must be included in the application.

Are we right for each other?
