Position description
AI is increasingly being integrated into daily life to enhance our abilities. However, AI poses significant risks and challenges in various areas of application. As a result, there are growing concerns about the trustworthiness of AI systems, particularly in critical environments.

In trustworthy AI, we aim to develop computational solutions for AI systems that meet the requirements for trustworthiness and gain society's trust.

The PhD position is available in computer science with a focus on trustworthy AI. The student position will focus on the following research area:

Topic: Responsible AI

The project will conduct empirical research on algorithmic biases to increase trustworthiness in AI. Further investigation will include the theoretical and technical aspects of measuring the fairness, fairness auditing, and discrimination for AI algorithms that can manifest in AI systems due to reasons such as the data collection process, uncertainty in underlying data distributions, and inherent biases in the underlying AI models. In particular, the investigation in this project includes:

• Minimizing bias in data-generating processes.
• Developing methods for detecting, analysing and handling bias.
• Auditing bias by incorporating fairness constraints.

Qualifications
The applicant should have a B.SC/M.Sc. or four years of study (240 higher education credits) with at least one year (60 credits) at second-cycle degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering. Proficiency in English, both written and oral, is required.

• Knowledge and experience in Artificial intelligence and Machine learning.
• Programming experience is required such as knowledge of Python, and related libraries e.g., Tensorflow or PyTorch and Pandas etc.

Assessment criteria
Prior to employment, consideration must be given to the ability to assimilate third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education.

Knowledge in one or more of the following areas will provide a competitive advantage:

• Knowledge of statistics and probability theory.

Knowledge of linear algebra and optimization is advantageous.

Experience in writing scientific articles and honours, awards are considered to be merit.

In an overall assessment of suitability, emphasis is also placed on personal abilities. All employees at MDU are expected to cooperate and treat colleagues and students with respect, take responsibility for the organisation and their own work duties and contribute to a positive work environment.

We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organization.
