Position description
Research will be conducted within project BRAINSAFEDRIVE - A Technology to detect Mental States During Drive for improving the Safety of the road.
BRAINSAFEDRIVE will develop a tool with "attentional detectors" to determine drivers' mental state, such as inattentive, confused, and tired, in real time during simulated or natural driving. For this, the project combines state of the art in two areas: 1) the acquisition and analysis of cerebral signals i.e. Electroencephalography (EEG) and Electrooculography (EOG); 2) the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) algorithms. Cognitive Neuroscience results suggest that cerebral activity during visuomotor tasks is quite different when subjects are in the states "tired" or "inattentive" when compared to "normal" states. BRAINSAFEDRIVE will realize a tool for the comprehension and characterization of the cerebral states during visuomotor decision-making when driving. The drivers' mental state will be correlated with vehicular parameters, e.g., braking, speed, acceleration, and lane changes, in order to enable classification of the driving as "normal, healthy, and safe".
The position focus is on advanced data analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and biomedical signal processing; as well as data modeling and simulation environment integration. The work requires theoretical studies on the state of art, together with software development and testing. As a PhD student, you are expected to develop independent ideas and to communicate research results in oral and written form. The employment includes collaboration and co-production both nationally and internationally.
Qualifications
Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentships. For futher information see Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100).
The applicant should have a master degree, or equivalent, in Computer Science. Proficiency in English, both written and oral, is required.
Knowledge/experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and signal processing is required. Experience of multi-sensor fusion is of high merit.
Extensive programming experience is required, with knowledge of Java, Python, MATLAB, and data analysis platforms such as Hadoop, being of high merit.
Professional experience and/or domain knowledge of physiological signal analysis in human monitoring is considered of merit.
