We are offering a PhD student position in the area of resource management in real-time networked embedded systems, including modeling, analysis and development of related algorithms and tools. The PhD student position is starting in 1st of April 2012.
Abstract: In many complex industrial software application domains (such as automotive, automation and avionics systems), systems functionalities (software) are distributed among a number of computing nodes that are connected through a transmission media (network). Many such applications have requirements on providing guarantees on real-time properties of the communication between nodes, i.e., data frames should be received by the nodes before certain time called deadline. However, as the system resources are limited (such as communication bandwidth) and the complexity and dependency between different functionalities are increasing, achieving such requirements can be difficult without using efficient resource management approaches.
The open PhD student position is intended for research and development of new models that use resource reservation techniques to achieve efficient resource utilization and also provide predictable integration of the applications/functionalities (i.e., applications can be integrated easily without violating their timing requirements). The target systems are medium and large scale networks assuming different communication technologies such as the CAN bus, Switched Ethernet and FlexRay. Given this, we will develop new protocols and/or extend existing ones with suitable theoretical analysis methods to measure important timing properties (such as end-to-end delay, maximum jitter, throughput, etc.). In addition, implementations and simulations of the new protocols should be carried out to evaluate and compare the performance of the proposed solutions.
