Position description
Modern computer-controlled systems are complex in the sense that they are interconnected with a number of other types of systems. For example, cars and other transport vehicles can receive information from public networks to enhance the driving experience or to increase the safety of the systems. The interconnected nature of the systems opens them for potential security risks that complicates safety assurance. Hence, an understanding of the fundamental threats and the possible ways into a system is essential for proper risk reduction

Do you have a keen interest in understanding how modern systems can be made safe? Would you like to be a part of an internationally renowned research environment where collaboration and coproduction between different research groups and leading industry is a natural part of the daily work? The SSF-funded Serendipity project is announcing a PhD-positions in cyber-security for safety-critical cyber-physical systems. In Serendipity, we will develop new technologies and a platform for safety-critical connected cyber-physical systems. Our work will leverage existing techniques for dependable systems and augment these with scalable security solutions for open and heterogeneous systems. This position focuses on risk modelling and risk analysis. You will develop a novel risk analysis method that jointly targets both safety (failures) and security (misuse). You will identify the potential impact of security threats on safety and formalize the results to provide a foundation for risk reduction and risk elimination. Furthermore, you will develop a tool to facilitate the industrial use of the results.

The position includes both the above-mentioned disciplinary research and collaborative system-oriented research as well as implementation in the project's two demonstrators (one in avionics and one in autonomous vehicles). The selected applicant will be enrolled in our PhD-program and offered a paid position as a PhD-student. You will have career opportunities both in academia and in industry after a completed PhD.

Qualifications
Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentships. For futher information see Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100).

To qualify as a PhD student, you should have a master's level degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or equivalent. Prior knowledge about software engineering, cyber-physical systems, safety critical systems, and cyber security, is considered a merit.

The position requires a strong motivation for research, good verbal and written communication skills in English. Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organization.
