hela Sverige Mälardalen University (MDH) in Eskilstuna and Västerås is one of Sweden's largest university colleges with over 14 000 students and more than 900 employees. It has a long tradition of cooperating with society and has entered strategic agreements with both the public and the private sector. Most study programs fall into one of four main areas: economy, health and welfare, education, and engineering. The MDH research often takes the form of co-creation with external partners on the regional, national and global levels, with the aim to generate useful solutions for societal development. In 1999, MDH was the world's first university to be environmentally certified, and in 2006, it was the first higher education institution in Sweden to be certified for its work environment.
Skanska AB is one of the world's leading companies within construction, project development of commercial and residential projects and public-private partnerships. The Group has 41 000 employees in eleven selected home markets in Europe and the United States, with headquarters located in Stockholm.
This PhD student position is a university PhD position, part of the Automation Region Research Academy (ARRAY), hosted by Embedded Systems (ES) - the most research-intensive research environment at MDH and a national leader in embedded-systems research. ES is organized in 15 mutually supportive and cooperating research groups, and includes 38 professors, 75 additional senior researchers and more than 80 PhD-students. ARRAY include a total of 15 PhD students focusing on different aspects of automation related research.
Research at ES has a dominating focus on embedded software, with world leading competence in embedded-software development and real-time systems modelling and analysis. Internationally, ES has extensive co-operation and is known for its research as well as its strong industrial links. Industrial partners include major companies, such as ABB, Bombardier, Ericsson, Scania, Skanska and Volvo, as well as many smaller businesses, including several spin-off companies. ES provides a stimulating international research environment, characterized by its cooperative atmosphere, openness, and team spirit - a great environment for a researcher to grow in; with a mix of established and young researchers, several of which are employed or funded by industry.
Employment of the PhD student is with MDH. The education is carried out at MDH in collaboration with Skanska and other partners including Volvo CE and ABB AB. Complementing competences are available at Skanska, Volvo CE, ABB AB and MDH to support the successful completion of the research project.

Position description
The project's guiding vision is autonomous machines that are used for asphalting roads. The overall goal of such an autonomous solution is to provide higher quality road construction also with an overall lower risk for humans involved in such work.
The focus of this PhD student position is to address research challenges related to such automated road construction. Research challenges of the project include modelling, algorithm construction and embedded system design. Work includes analysis of machines involved in road construction, including machines used in Sweden and by Skanska AB. Asphalting (dispersion and compacting) is conducted guided using sensor data, e.g., characteristics of asphalt temperature and density, and geographical data/landscape maps, e.g., Land XML. Such data is to be used for machine control of a set of integrated machines used for the asphalting part of road construction.
Guiding the design of the embedded system architecture needed to realize such a system - a cyber physical system tailored for automated road construction - are requirements inherent in the ability of collecting correct and relevant data (sensors, algorithms, computations) along with conducting automated and seamless route planning of machines (algorithms, computations).
The project is funded by Skanska Sverige AB, the Knowledge Foundation (KKS) and SBUF (the construction industry's organization for research and development).
