Department of Molecular Sciences
The department of Molecular Sciences seeks a highly motivated candidate for a PhD position in structural analysis of biomolecules. The department of Molecular Sciences conducts research and education in the fields of chemistry, molecular biology, food science, and microbiology. The PhD student will be part of a research group working in the areas of structural analysis of natural products/biomolecules and metabolomics.
Structure and function of polysaccharides
Description:
The project aims to study the conformation, hydrogen bonding and hydration of natural and modified polysaccharides, with special focus on hyaluronan and alginates. Hyaluronan and alginates form gels and have applications in food sciences and biotechnology. However, the formation of gels at molecular level is still not well understood, despite a large number of research studies. NMR spectroscopy is mainly going to be used, but other techniques such as mass spectrometry and chromatographic methods will also be employed. Teaching is a part of the position up to 20% of the time.
Qualifications:
The candidate is expected to have a Master of Science degree or equivalent in chemistry or related subject. Specialization in organic chemistry, analytical chemistry or biochemistry, and experience of NMR spectroscopy are valuable merits. Earlier experience of laboratory work is desirable. Personal qualities such as ability to collaborate, analytical ability, and problem solving skills, and also ability to work independently are of high importance. Proven ability to communicate very well in written and spoken English is required.
