PhD Student in Biomedical Sciences with special emphasis in Innate immunity, ref 2010/2673
Linnaeus University is the result of a merger between Kalmar University and Växjö University. Together we will be creating a new, exciting university with 31 000 students and 2 000 employees. Linnaeus University will be a modern, international university in the Småland region of Sweden, where people can grow to reach their potential. For more information see: Lnu.se
The School of Natural Sciences is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The research activities within this multidisciplinary school include the areas of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Organic Chemistry, Marine Ecology and Microbiology.
The Complement Research Group seeks one PhD student for studies regarding basic mechanisms for biomaterial-induced blood activation, and develop strategies to inhibit these activation reactions.
Project title:
Regulatory aspects of the blood cascade systems
The research project: The project aim is to understand basic mechanisms for activation of the cascade systems and cells in the blood in contact with foreign surfaces (e.g., biomaterials) and to apply this knowledge to design novel inhibitors for these reactions. In the main experimental systems surfaces are exposed to human whole blood, or blood components (platelet rich plasma, plasma, serum) in different experimental setups, followed by analysis of fluid phase or cellular activation markers. Techniques used in the project include immunochemical techniques; ELISA, Western blotting, FACS, as well as confocal and fluorescence microscopy, PCR, immobilization of glycosaminoglycans and peptides/proteins, and cell culture.
Applicants should have a Masters Degree (240hp/240ECTS) or corresponding experiences in biomedical sciences, biomedical laboratory sciences or biology. Documented training and experience of working with human blood is an advantage, as well as knowledge in cell biology and chemistry, in particular protein chemistry. Experience from a graduate school is an additional qualification. Basic requirements for post-graduate studies are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 7.
The PhD studies are limited to 4 years (100%) but may be extended to 5 years through teaching at the undergraduate level. Successful completion of the post-graduate studies will lead to a PhD in Biomedical Sciences.
The starting point for the PhD education is negotiable. The position is located in Kalmar.
