Plant Biology and Forest Genetics in Uppsala
1 PhD student in the research education subject: Biology, specifically Genetics
Population and quantitative genetics of plant adaptation
We are looking for a PhD student to study the genetic basis of how plants adapt to their environment in the research team of Professor Karl Schmid (new appointee) at the Department of Plant Biology and Forest Genetics (BioCenter;
http://www.vbsg.slu.se) . Our focus is the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana for which we have established comprehensive collections from the whole species range. Variation in traits like flowering time, cold resistance, seed oil content is being measured; genetic variation is being determined by large-scale genotyping methods. Much of this work is done with collaboration with other, international research groups. You will work on developing and using computational methods to search for footprints of natural selection in patterns of genetic variation and to identify genes that may play a role in trait variation by linking phenotypic with genetic variation by association mapping. In the last ten years, A. thaliana became an important model species for studying the ecology and evolution of plants. Meanwhile, numerous genes that influence variation in phenotypic traits have been characterized. In no other plant species, it is currently possible to study plant adaptation at more detailed level as with A. thaliana. We are mainly interested in finding out which traits (and the genes controlling them) are subject to Darwinian selection and thus important for adaptation to different habitats. Such genes are identified by comparing individuals from very different habitats such as the Mediterranean region or the high Alps, where one would expect selection-driven adaptation to differences in temperature, light or pathogens. The research methods include bioinformatics, population genetics and quantitative genetics and will be performed mainly on the computer, and to a lesser degree in the laboratory and the greenhouse. You will work in a stimulating and international environment for basic and applied plant science at SLU. There is an active research community in plant evolution, bioinformatics and quantitative genetics in Uppsala.
Qualifications: A suitable background is biology, bioinformatics, computer science, statistics with a focus on biological subjects such as genetics or evolution. Documented knowledge in database design and computer programming is a merit.
Form for funding or employment: The emplyoment as a PhD student is for four years of postgraduate studies.
SLU is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
