1 PhD student in the research education subject: Biology, ecology
Climate change: Its effects on population demography and evolution
The department of Ecology conducts research and education in applied ecology; effects of human activity and environmental change on pest species, wildlife management and biodiversity. We are looking for a PhD student who will work with the links between climate change, evolutionary change and population growth of a farmland bird - the northern wheatear. Recent songbird studies show that increased spring temperatures may advance the timing of breeding for resident and migratory species. However, these changes in breeding time might not be synchronized with ecological factors important for breeding (e.g. food peaks) leading to a maladaptive mismatch in the timing of breeding. Such mismatches can impact on adult survival and fecundity, increasing the probability of local extinctions. Because studies on climate-driven changes in breeding time are generally restricted to nest-box breeding species dependent on specific larvae (displaying a very marked temporal food peak) during chick rearing, there is a need for detailed studies from other habitats and on other individual traits (e.g. habitat preference and dispersal) if we are to increase our general understanding of the impact of climate change on bird populations. The focus of this PhD will be on a farmland-breeding ground-foraging migratory bird species – the Northern Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) – a population which has been intensively monitored since the mid 1990s with some data extending back to the 1980s. The position will involve fieldwork within the ongoing project and extensive analyses of the long-term dataset. You will work in a group of at least five people partly working with this study system. The application shall include: 1) a summary of your previous achievements (max 1 page), 2) a short description (max 1 page) on how you view the research task, 3) MSc thesis (or equivalent), 4) curriculum vitae and 5) reference person(s).
Qualifications
You need a Masters degree in Ecology or equivalent. Experience in field work, bird ringing and data analysis together with good skills in writing English is an advantage.
