1 PhD student in the research education subject: Biology
The IMPRESS project: Fungal communities as determinants of carbon sequestration in forest soils
Boreal forest soils represent a carbon sink of global importance. Here, fungi are the key players in decomposition and nutrient turnover. A better understanding of factors regulating the functional diversity of fungi is urgently needed, in order to improve understanding of how and when carbon is stored in soils. In this PhD-project, cutting edge DNA-based methods will be used to analyse fungal communities in forest soils, evaluating effects of forest fertility, forest management and climate. By bioinformatic analyses, data from DNA sequencing will be transformed to information about fungal diversity and community composition. Novel isotopic techniques (14C bomb carbon modelling) will be used to estimate long-term carbon dynamics in soils, in relation to fungal communities. The data will be used to yield correlative relationships between fungal communities and soil carbon dynamics, using multivariate statistical models. The successful applicant will work in the ?strong research environment? IMPRESS (Integrating microorganisms into predictive models of carbon sequestration in forest soils), which is a collaborative network involving researchers from three SLU departments and Örebro University, including three new PhD positions. IMPRESS aims at improving the capacity of ecosystem models to predict future national carbon budgets. The position is placed at the Dept. of Forest Mycology and Plant Pathology at SLU in Uppsala. The research group offers a creative and stimulating environment. We conduct internationally recognized research in microbial ecology and forest ecosystem ecology, and specialize in using molecular tools, such as DNA barcoding, gene expression studies and enzyme analyses, to address large-scale ecological questions.
Qualifications
An MSc or ?Magister? degree in biology or equivalent. Deeper knowledge in fungal biology, forest ecology, molecular ecology and statistics is a merit. Personal qualities such as ability to collaborate, high degree of self-motivation and interest in both field and laboratory work will be considered. The selection will be based on the written application, CV, diploma/exam work, personal references, good knowledge in English and an interview. Drivers licence is an advantage.
