The IMPRESS project: New models of carbon sequestration in forest soils
Fungi are pivotal drivers of soil processes in boreal ecosystems. The regulation of carbon and nutrient cycling is fundamentally different depending on if fluxes are mediated by root associated mycorrhizal fungi and their host plants, or by free-living decomposing fungi. The aim of this PhD-project is to develop mathematical models that represent these different systems explicitly. The models will be used to analyse and explain the conditions under which a certain functional system dominates and how this depends on environmental changes. We will use data on fungal community composition and data on C dynamics from field and laboratory experiments in collaboration with the other PhD students in IMPRESS as supporting data in model development. The successful applicant will work in the ?strong research environment? IMPRESS (Integrating microorganisms into predictive models of carbon sequestration in forest soils), which is a collaborative network involving researchers from three SLU departments and Örebro University, including three new PhD positions. IMPRESS aims at improving the capacity of ecosystem models to predict future national carbon budgets. The position is placed at the Dept. of Ecology at SLU in Uppsala. The research group offers a creative and stimulating environment, and has long been pushing the frontiers in mathematical ecosystem modelling, conducting internationally recognised research in forest ecology.
Qualifications
The position requires a University degree with mathematics and biology as components, as well an openness to engage in issues related to forest ecology and climate change. Knowledge in terrestrial ecology and ecosystem modelling, as well as experience of programming are merits. Personal qualities such as ability to collaborate, high degree of self-motivation and enthusiasm will be considered. The selection will be based on the written application, CV, diploma/exam work, personal references, good knowledge in English and an interview.

Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
