The IMPRESS project: Quantification of carbon fluxes in forest ecosystems
The aim of this PhD-project is to improve the mechanistic understanding of factors regulating carbon fluxes in forests soils. The main focus will be production, standing biomass, turnover and respiration of fungal mycelium. Fungi are central drivers of soil processes such as carbon cycling and decomposition. Since boreal forest soils have been identified as a carbon sink of global importance, understanding of the processes regulating carbon sequestration represents a major challenge. Ultimately, modelling of carbon and nitrogen dynamics require integration of microorganisms, as well as consideration about site fertility and forest management practices. The project will produce quantitative estimates of fungal growth, activity and turnover, which then can be used in mathematical ecosystem models. This project will mainly use an experimental approach in the field, and combines respiratory and stable isotope measurements with laboratory assays of fungal biomass and DNA based analyses of community composition. The successful applicant will work in the "strong research environment" IMPRESS (Integrating microorganisms into predictive models of carbon sequestration in forest soils), which is a collaborative project involving researchers from three SLU departments and Örebro University, including three new PhD positions. IMPRESS aims at improving the capacity of ecosystem models to predict future national carbon budgets. The position is placed at the Dept. of Forest Mycology and Plant Pathology at SLU in Uppsala. The research group offers a creative and stimulating environment, working with cutting edge methodology such as stable isotope analysis, DNA-based fingerprinting of microbial communities and ecosystem-scale carbon flux measurements. We contribute to internationally recognized basic and applied research in microbial ecology and forest ecosystem carbon cycling.
Qualifications
A MSC or "Magister" in biology or equivalent. Knowledge in terrestrial ecology, laboratory techniques and statistics is a merit. Personal qualities such as ability to collaborate, high degree of self-motivation and enthusiasm about both field and laboratory work will be considered. The selection will be based on the written application, CV, diploma/exam work, personal references, good knowledge in English and an interview. Drivers licence is an advantage.
