1 PhD student in the research education subject: Biology
Ultrastructural and molecular studies on the efficacy of modern and novel wood protecting systems
We are looking for a PhD student to join our research group working on the efficacy of modern and novel wood protecting systems. In this project you will carry out pioneering work to unravel the micro- and nanostructural distributions of modern wood protecting agents (e.g. micronized nanoCu treatments and hydrophobic agents (silicones, oils) at the wood cell wall level and determine their in-situ efficacy against important wood decay organisms in particular against the hazardous brown rot fungi. You will learn and carry out the testing of novel wood protecting formulations against biological organisms using EU test criteria and have interaction with industry. You will also work with the isolation and identification of fungi colonizing test samples using molecular methods. We have ongoing research on several aspects of wood cell wall ultrastructure and this project will important link between basic and applied research. You will have the opportunity to be trained in state-of-the-art techniques in microscopy (scanning and transmission electron microscopy) wood protection and cell wall analysis as well as scientific thinking and writing. You will work in a highly stimulating environment at the Department of Forest Products (www.sprod.slu.se) with a friendly and international atmosphere. You will join a dynamic research group of about ten scientists working on different aspects of wood and fibre cell wall ultrastructure, biosynthesis, biodegradation, protection and technology. We have broad expertise in wood science and wood technology and we aim to provide breakthrough knowledge in the area, with possible applications for use in the forestry sector.
Qualifications
Candidates should be highly motivated and have an interest in wood science/technology and have a Masters degree (or equivalent) in wood science, wood technology, plant biology, biochemistry or chemistry. Previous experience with microscopy, mycological and molecular techniques is a merit. An ability to communicate well in written and spoken English is a requirement and is the working language of the group. Candidates should have a high degree of self motivation with an ability to work independently as well as take their own initiative.
