1 PhD student in the research education subject: Biology
Population genomics of the dry rot fungus Serpula lacrymans (hussvamp)
Fungi are the major decomposers of wood and other recalcitrant organic matter, but in spite of this, surprisingly little is known about the wood decay process. In this PhD-project comparative genomics and transcriptomics will be used to study this research area. Specific questions to explore include differences between the brown- and whiterot decay strategies and their evolutionary origin as well as their variation within populations. The genome project of Serpula lacrymans (hussvamp) and other recently sequenced genomes form a unique opportunity to illuminate these processes. Population genomics by means of high throughput techniques will be used to reveal areas of the genome under positive selection and low recombination. The long-term goal of the project is to develop new ways of producing bioethanol. The Department of Forest Mycology and Pathology is part of the newly established science cluster, Uppsala BioCenter, representing an excellent life science environment. We conduct both fundamental and applied research, focused on interactions between plants, fungi and other microorganisms and their roles in forest and agricultural systems.
Qualifications
The successful applicant for the position as a PhD student holds a higher university degree in biology, biotechnology and/or bioinformatics. Knowledge of bioinformatics and evolutionary theory will be useful as well as basic knowledge in programming in languages such as Perl or Python. General molecular biology skills including RNA technology and qPCR are regarded as additional qualifications. Personal qualities such as ability to cooperate with others will be considered. Very good written and spoken English is required.

Those who met the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e. had completed a programme of higher education for at least 180 Higher education credits or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of 2015."
Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
