Department of Plant Biology and Forest Genetics in Ultuna
1 PhD student in the research education subject: Biology with emphasis on genetics
Population and quantitative genetics of plant adaptation in wild barley
We are looking for a PhD student who will study the ecological genomics of plant adaptation in the wild ancestor of barley (Hordeum vulgare). The goal of the project is to identifying traits and the underlying genes conferring resistance against biotic and abiotic stress responsible for adaptation to different environments within the species range. The ongoing and anticipated changes in global climate in addition with the food crisis due to environmental, economical and demographic reasons puts a pressure on agriculture and plant breeding to increase yield in agriculture production with less input and a decreasing area available for agriculture. One approach to address this problem is to utilize genetic variation in wild ancestors of modern crop species, which harbor more potentially useful genetic variation than modern elite varieties. In collaboration with other research groups, a set of individuals originating from ecologically contrasting environments will be sequenced using next-generation sequencing technology and analyzed for patterns of genetic variation. You will be responsible for planning and managing the sequencing work and analyze sequence data using bioinformatics and population genetic methods to develop genetic markers for genetic mapping and to conduct tests of natural selection on the data. The research methods include bioinformatics, population genetics and molecular evolution and will be performed mainly using computer analysis. You will work at the Department Plant Biology and Forest Genetics at SLU – Uppsala (Ultuna) with extended periods at the Department of Plant Breeding, University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. You will encounter a stimulating and international work environment for basic and applied plant science at SLU and receive extensive training in utilizing and analyzing large-scale sequencing data for genetic analysis. There is an active research community in plant evolution, bioinformatics and quantitative genetics in Uppsala. The Department of Plant Biology and Forest Genetics is one of six departments making up the new cluster Uppsala BioCenter at SLU, Ultuna (
