The School of Pure and Applied Natural Sciences is part of the Faculty of Natural Science and Engineering. The research activities within this multidisciplinary school include the areas of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Organic chemistry, Microbiology, Aquatic ecology, Mathematics and Physics. The research group of Biotechnology now seeks a PhD student for studies on drug discovery and diagnostics using transient binders to selected receptors or other molecular targets.
Project title: Transient-binding molecules for drug discovery and diagnostics.
The research project deals with the exploration and design of molecular candidates that only bind weakly (transiently) to selected targets for studies in drug discovery and diagnostics. Both small molecules and lager proteins will be considered. Bioanalytical screening systems will be used based on miniaturized, fast and high-performance separations of various molecular libraries. Applications will be focused on disorders in the cardiovascular and central nervous system as well as cancer diagnostics. The project is part of a larger collaboration with the pharmaceutical and bioanalytical industry both nationally and abroad and with academic institutions in Sweden. The selected PhD student will have unique opportunities to gain deep knowledge and skills of the drug discovery process and will be familiarized with a whole range of bioanalytical techniques used in an academic and industrial biotechnology/biochemistry environment.
Applicants should have a Masters Degree (240hp/240ECTS) in a subject area of relevance for the present project. Documented training and experience of Bioanalytical chemistry, Medicinal chemistry and Biochemistry will be an advantage. Interest in mathematics/computational work is a plus. Basic requirements for post-graduate studies are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 7.
The PhD studies are limited to 4 years (100%) but may be extended to 5 years through teaching at the undergraduate level. Successful completion of the post-graduate studies will lead to a PhD in Biochemistry/Biotechnology. During the first half of the studies (two years full-time) you will be paid by a post-graduate study scholarship (“utbildningsbidragâ€) and a PhD position (â€doktorandanställningâ€) starting from the beginning of the third year. The starting point for the PhD education is flexible and may be negotiated.
