1 PhD student in the research education subject: Aquatic Ecology
PhD student with focus on stream ecology and ecosystem functioning
Running waters are arguably the most heavily degraded of the Earth?s ecosystems, often impacted simultaneously by nutrient enrichment, riparian disturbance, hydromorphological modifications, and biodiversity loss. These disturbances alter connectivity within stream networks and impact the structure of stream food webs, ultimately affecting the ecosystem processes underlying ecosystem service delivery (e.g. plant productivity, detritus decomposition). Management of these impacts requires an improved understanding of how abiotic and biotic factors interact to affect ecosystem functioning. This PhD project will address three key topics in ecosystem functioning research: (i) development of multiple functional metrics for assessing human impacts on ecosystem functioning, (ii) interactions between abiotic and biotic drivers of functioning, and effects of anthropogenic activities on those drivers, and (iii) use of a metacommunity framework for research on functioning, to address deficiencies in our understanding of how diversity influences functioning when biota are mobile and resources are patchily distributed, at both local and landscape scales
Qualifications
Applicants should hold an MSc in aquatic ecology, ecology or equivalent and hold a current driver?s license. Strong skills in statistical analysis and/or a good knowledge of biogeochemistry would be advantageous. The application should include a Curriculum Vitae, a short description of experience indicating your suitability for the position and why you are interested, copies of degree certificates from higher education, a record of relevant publication where applicable, contact information of at least two references, and ideally a written reference from at least one referee. The position is full-time and will be granted for a period of four years, starting as soon as possible.

Those who met the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e. had completed a programme of higher education for at least 180 Higher education credits or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of 2015."
Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
