Hereby advertises a position as

PhD student in Applied Physics  (ESR2: Photopatternable Solid Polymer Electrolytes)
formally based at Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM)

General
Applications are invited for a PhD position ("Early Stage Researchers" ESR) to be funded bythe Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network "MICACT - Microactuators" within the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission. MICACT is a consortium of high profile universities, research institutions and companies located in France, Estonia, Germany, United Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherland, Spain, Italy, China, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Monaco. The training network offers also the participation in several training schools on electroactive polymers, a personal career development plan and secondments to international partners.

Duties
As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD student you are limited devoted to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.

ESR2 focuses on the design of Solid Polymer Electrolytes (SPEs) photopatternable by visible/UV light. The objective of this task is to design light-sensitive materials which can be deposited and patterned as easily as a photoresist and may be used as SPE in the fabrication of microactuators. First the ESR will learn to fabricate microactuators at LiU. Next the ESR will design the photopatternable SPE combining high ionic conductivity and good mechanical properties. ESR will do parts of the synthetic work during a secondment at Université de Cergy Pontoise, France. ESR will test the photopatterning of the new SPEs and integrate these in novel in-air IEAP microactuators during the remainder of the studies at LiU.

Qualifications
Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.

M.Sc. in (Applied) Physics, (Polymer) Chemistry, Material Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field. Strong experimental skills in materials science, polymer science, or related field. Experience in the fields of soft actuators and/or clean room processes will be appreciated.

The candidate should have a strong interest in interdisciplinary research and enjoy teamwork with colleagues in a multicultural setting. He/she should adept at thinking at a system level, interested in applications and enjoy building and testing working devices. The candidate should be highly motivated, taking initiative, communicative, quality minded, flexible, and eager to learn. He/she should be eager to frequent travel to secondment hosts and workshops.

The candidate must be fluent in English. Knowledge of Swedish is a plus.

Researchers can be of any nationality. At the time of recruitment researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the application date. Short stays such as holidays and/or compulsory national service are not taken into account

Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. A doctoral student may not be employed during a period not exceeding eight years. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of four years' full time research training.
