At the School of Innovation, Design and Engineering our students are studying to be for example innovators, entrepreneurs, illustrators, communications officers, network technicians and engineers. Here we have the research specialisations of Embedded Systems, and Innovation and Product Realisation. Our work takes place in cooperation with and in strategic agreements with companies, organisations and public authorities in the region. Industrial partners include major companies, such as ABB, Bombardier, Alfa Laval, GKN and Volvo, as well as many smaller businesses.

Position description
The focus of this PhD student position is research into automation applications. This is an area of research that has been receiving an increasing attention by the research community over the past years, but which traditionally has focused on the technical solutions.

The focus of this research project is to study applications of industrial automation; to investigate how, when and to what benefit enabling technologies within automation should be implemented in industrial applications. The project approaches the problem by integrating the three perspectives of technology, user and value-adding process. The focus lies on system level aspects and topics to explore include activities and product/volume/mix scenarios relevant for automation, productivity gains that can be achieved, and potential quality gains. Key envisioned application areas are collaborative robotics, use of simulation for system level analysis and logistics automation. In summary, the PhD project will develop several application areas of automation, following a new direction when it comes to recent technology developments.

As a PhD student, you will be full time employed during five years of which you are supposed to teach 20% of your times. The teaching activities will be in the area of production and logistics. You are supposed to develop and carry out your PhD research within the area of application of automation and the topic should be developed of the PhD student together with its supervisors at the beginning of the PhD studies.

Qualifications
Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentships. For futher information see Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100).

To qualify as a PhD student, you should have a master's level degree in production engineering, automation engineering, or equivalent.

The position requires a strong motivation for research, good verbal and written communication skills in English. Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organization.

Work outside academia and also in inter-functional cooperation is considered as a merit. Good communicative abilities in Swedish is to advantage since this facilitates participation in the earlier years of first-cycle studies. Further, experiences from teaching are considered as a merit.
