1 PhD student in the research education subject: Animal Science
Utilization of local protein feeds in milk production
Ruminant animals, such as cattle and sheep, are unique, because of their special digestive system based on microbial fermentation. They can convert otherwise unusable plant materials and low quality proteins into nutritious feeds. Currently a large proportion of protein supplements for dairy cows are imported feeds such as soybean meal. However, in dairy cows the marginal utilization of supplementary protein is low since only 10-15% of incremental protein intake is recovered as milk protein. This increases N emissions into the atmosphere in the form of ammonia and N oxides, and into ground waters as nitrates. The objective of this PhD project is to optimize the use of locally produced protein supplements in organic and conventional milk production systems. The studies include production and physiological trials in dairy cows, in vitro and in situ studies and evalution of feed protein models.
Qualifications
Must have Master of Science degree in animal science (ruminant nutrition) or equivalent in a related discipline. Experience in working with animals and laboratory are advantages. The applicant should have proven skills both in oral and written scientific English. Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
