LINKÖPING UNIVERSITY
Hereby advertises two positions as PhD Student in Analytical Sociology
based at the Institute for Analytical Sociology at the Department of Social and Welfare Studies

Duties
We seek to fill two positions as PhD student (for 4 years full-time) at the Institute for Analytical Sociology (IAS). Analytical sociology is focused on explaining key macro outcomes such as segregation patterns, inequalities, network structures and the spread of different kinds of behavior, and to specify in detail the mechanisms that generated the macro outcomes in question. The research conducted at IAS to a large extent utilizes data from Swedish population registers in order to study these phenomena.

We welcome applicants with a research plan that relates to the research areas that are represented at the IAS.

As a PhD student you will primarily focus on your own research and training. You are not allowed to devote more than 20 percent of your time to other tasks such as teaching and administration.

Qualifications
In order to be eligible for the PhD program you must have a postgraduate degree (MA or equivalent), of which at least 90 credits are in an area or discipline of fundamental significance for Analytical Sociology.

Because IAS is an international research environment, the ability to express oneself in English, both orally and in written form, is a prerequisite to carry out the PhD studies. Because all the courses and seminars are held in English, Swedish is not a requirement. The PhD student is expected to carry out their doctoral work in residence at the IAS, Campus Norrköping, Linköping University.

The position requires that you are able to express yourself clearly in oral and in written form and that you have sufficient analytical abilities. When selecting among eligible applicants, special attention is paid to:

• originality, feasibility, and potential scholarly contribution of the planned research
• the quality of the applicant's earlier writings and other merits
• the possibility of IAS to offer adequate supervision within the area of the planned research
• documented skills in Analytical Sociology, quantitative social science research and complex quantitative methods, such as network analysis and agent-based modeling

Based on the above criteria, the most suited applicants will be contacted for an interview and work samples. Also see the general study plan for more information about admission criteria, http://www.liu.se/ias/forskarutbildning?l=en .

Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. A doctoral student may not be employed for more than eight years, and the total time of the appointment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full time work.

Starting date
By agreement

Salary
