Linnaeus University seeks
PhD student for studies on influenza A virus ecology and evolution ref 2010/3076
The School of Natural Sciences is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The research activities within this multidisciplinary school include the areas of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Organic Chemistry, Marine Ecology and Microbiology. The research group of Zoonotic Ecology and Epidemiology now seeks a PhD student for studies on influenza A virus ecology and evolution.
The research project aims to get a better understanding on host ? pathogens interactions of influenza A virus in wild, migratory Mallards Anas platyrhynchos. As bases for the studies, the student will work with a long-term data series of virus prevalence in a population of Mallards from SE Sweden. Particular questions that will be addressed are: rates of subtype evolution over time, processes of genetic reassortment in influenza A virus, virus ? cell interactions, as well as epidemiological interactions of an assemblage of viral pathogens in the study host population. Wild waterfowl are the primary reservoir for low-pathogenic avian influenza viruses, and the genetic pool from which certain genotypes can be seeded into domestic poultry, and ultimately linked with the flu that can affect humans. Therefore, an understanding of fundamental processes in influenza A virus ecology and epidemiology in wild birds will provide insights applicable in both animal and human health. The student will be involved in both molecular laboratory work and modelling of epidemiological parameters related to infections.
Applicants should have a Masters Degree (240hp/240ECTS) in a subject area of relevance for the present project. Documented training and experience of influenza A virology and/or bird ecology is an advantage. Written and oral communication skills in English are essential. Basic requirements for post-graduate studies are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 7.
The PhD studies are limited to 4 years (100%) but may be extended by up to 5 years through teaching at the undergraduate level. Successful completion of the post-graduate studies will lead to a PhD in Biomedical Sciences.
The starting point for the PhD education is negotiable. The position is located in Kalmar.
