Name of research project/thesis
Mercury biogeochemistry: The time-dependency of chemical bonding to natural organic matter functional groups

Description:
A new Ph.D. studentship position is available with the Department of Forest Ecology and Management at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, in Umeå, Sweden. Mercury is a global pollutant that is emitted to the atmosphere as a consequence of fossil fuel combustion. After deposition to oceans and terrestrial environments, mercury is transformed to the very toxic methyl mercury molecule in wet soils and aquatic environments. In the same environments mercury is also reduced to elemental mercury and back-emitted as a gas to the atmosphere. Both the methylation and the reduction process highly affect the uptake of mercury in biota. In this project the time-dependency of mercury bonding to natural organic matter (NOM) functional groups is investigated. Studies have indicated that the structure of Hg-NOM is changing with time and that these changes highly dictate rates of Hg methylation and reduction. You will as a PhD student work with some of the leading scientists in mercury biogeochemistry and you will use some of the most modern synchrotron radiation sources such as MAXIV in Lund, Sweden.

Qualifications:
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a strong interest in biogeochemistry. The applicant should have a Master's degree (or equivalent) in biogeochemistry, environmental science, environmental chemistry, soil science, or similar. Personal qualities such as dedication and ability to focus on solving scientific challenges are essential. The applicant should have the ability to work both independently and in a team. A proven ability to communicate excellently in written and spoken English is essential. Previous experiences of X-ray absorption spectroscopy analyses of metals and biogeochemical laboratory work are important merits.
