hela Sverige Chalmers is a university of technology in which research and teaching are conducted on a broad front within technology, natural science and architecture. Currently there are approximately 11 000 students and 2400 employees at Chalmers.
The department for Chemical and biological engineering performs education and research for sustainable development, for improved health and quality of life. Our research covers widely within out field, ranging from natural science and bioscience, applied chemistry and biotechnology to chemical engineering. Our educational programs are characterized by technological solutions for improving people's everyday life, and are continuously developed for meeting and pushing societal and industrial development.
We are now looking for a Ph.D. student to join the SUPRA project, which is shared between the Chalmers chemistry and physics departments, and to ultimately get the PhD in one of these departments. The Linné SUPRA has 19 principle and secondary investigators and 10 PhD students. The groups collaborating on this project have more than 15 postdocs and graduate students to interact with.
Job description
The research project will involve development of methods to examine the effects of nanoparticles on biological membranes. Specifically, the student will use quartz crystal microbalance, electrochemical monitoring, fluorescence, and other related methods to develop approaches to understand membrane-nanoparticle interactions and the effects of nanoparticles on the neurotransmission process of exocytosis. Work will involve both model systems and live cell experiments and cell culture. The student will be expected to interact and collaborate with postdocs and other students working in areas from biosensing to chemical imaging and separations.
Qualifications
The successful candidate should have a M. Sc. in Chemistry, Chemical engineering, Physics, Engineering Physics, Nanoscience/technology, Biotechnology or an equivalent education. Knowledge in electrochemistry, quartz crystal microbalance, or nanoparticles is a merit for the position but not a requirement. Good knowledge in English is required and the applicant should be able to communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. The applicant is recommended to learn Swedish within a few years.
In order to improve the gender balance in this area, we especially welcome applications from female candidates for the position.
