YKI is starting a research project in cooperation with five industrial partners and Mid-Sweden University (MiUn). The project is called Next Generation Substrates for Inkjet Printing and gives a lot of opportunities to make contacts in industrial as well as academic environment.
Project description
Novel inkjet coatings, consisting of silica pigments with nanopores, have been developed at YKI in a previous project. Here, inkjet coatings with nanometer and micrometer pores especially designed for inkjet printing will be synthesized and characterized. Wetting, spreading and penetration measurements, also using new contact angle techniques in the picoliter droplet range, will be use to characterize the interaction with both pigment-coated and uncoated paper substrates. Spectroscopic investigation of ink-paper interaction and ink distribution in paper will be used to quantify the chemical substances laterally and vertically in the paper substrates. There will be a strong focus both on new pigment development together with industrial partners and on the fundamental understanding on the relation between the pore structure in the pigments, the base paper and the print quality. Part of the experimental work will be done at Mid-Sweden University and at industrial partners’ facilities.
Requirements
Design of sound experiments, laboratory skills and characterization will be the key elements of this PhD. Therefore, the candidates’ skills must be multi-disciplined, with a strong background in chemistry or materials science and a strong preference for additional experience in colloid and surface science, papermaking and skillful use of combinations of advanced scientific instrumentation. Furthermore, the applicants should be energetic, highly motivated and possess excellent communication skills.
Conditions
You will be employed by and based at YKI in Stockholm. Part of the work will be conducted at the laboratories of participating industrial and academic partners.
Starting date can be as early as mid April 2008 and the employment is for four years. The salary follows conditions at KTH for doctoral positions. You will be covered by the regular employment based benefits such as health benefits.
