The School of Pure and Applied Natural Sciences is part of the Faculty of NaturalScience and Engineering. The research activities within this multidisciplinary schoolinclude the areas of Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, Organic chemistry,Microbiology, Aquatic ecology, Mathematics and Physics. The research group of Plant Biochemistry/Plant Biotechnology now seeks a PhD student for functional genomics studies on multicellular glandular trichomes from plants.
The overall objective of this project is to create a better understanding of the metabolism in multicellular glandular trichomes through transcriptome analysis of different cell types
using Artemisia annua as a model plant. Different cell types from glandular trichomes will be isolates. mRNA will be prepared from the isolated cell populations and use to
construct the corresponding cDNA libraries. EST libraries for the different cell types will be established and the major functions of the different cell types determined. Differentially expressed genes encoding putative enzymes of secondary metabolism willbe isolated and their promoters studied using reporter genes.
Project title: Differential expression of biosynthetic enzymes in glandular trichomes of plants.
Applicants should have a Masters Degree (240hp/240ECTS) in Biology or Chemistry with a strong focus on Biochemistry and/or Cell Biology. Documented training and experience of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics will be of advantage. Basic requirements for post-graduate studies are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 9.
The PhD studies are limited to 4 years (100%) but may be extended to 5 years through teaching at the undergraduate level. Successful completion of the post-graduate studies will
lead to a PhD in Biochemistry. During the first half of the studies (two years full-time) you will be paid by a post-graduate study scholarship (“utbildningsbidrag) and a PhD position
(‘doktorandtjänst’) starting from the beginning of the third year. The starting point for the PhD education is flexible and may be negotiated.
