The Department of Energy and Technology at the Soil, Water and Environment Center (MVM) in Uppsala offers a stimulating and interdisciplinary research environment with both national and international focus. Potential of bark and biochar filters for removal of microplastics from stormwater
Duties:
Stormwater is a major pathway for urban microplastics (MP) from car tires and asphalt particles into the environment. MP are not just problematic as particles, but also as vectors for additives such as plasticisers, flame retardants, etcetera. Road-side bark and biochar filters are a potential solution for MP and other pollutants from stormwater and act as carbon sinks. When planted, these filters created added values by increasing the urban green spaces. We are looking for a highly motivated and hard-working PhD student who is interested in investigating the efficiency and design of green filters (bark and biochar) at road-sides to remove MP and other pollutants from stormwater, and at the same time evaluate their function as urban green elements. During the PhD period, the student will be engaged in different of experimental and field sampling aiming at (i) assessing the composition, sources, size and quantities of MP in stormwater from different urban sources, including road-side and car parking areas and (ii) Assessment and comparison the efficiency and potential of road-side filters of biochar or bark in removing MP and as green beds, and compare them with soil infiltration beds.
Qualifications:
The candidate should have a master degree in technology or engineering, with clear connection to environmental pollution or urban water management. The applicant should have the basic eligibility for third cycle education if he or she has taken a second cycle qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second cycle education. Upper secondary school grades equivalent to English B/English 6 are a basic requirement. The applicant should have excellent skills of communication in English. The work involves communication with different actors related to storm water management. We put great emphasis on analytical and problem-solving ability, motivation, collaborative ability and ability to work
independently.
The aim of the employment is primarily a licentiate degree, but extension for another 2 years for a doctoral degree may become an option.
