Air pollution, genetical susceptibility and inflammation - Studies of gene-environmental interaction
Project description:
Genetic and environmental factors are important for the development of inflammation and airway and cardiovascular disease. How these factors interact is still largely unknown. The purpose of this project is to utilize a population cohort, where 6 000 subjects have been examined with exhaled nitric oxide (a measure of airway inflammation), and 800 consecutive patients with acute myocardial ischemia, to study the interaction between exposure to air-pollutants, genetic susceptibility to oxidative stress and inflammation. Air pollution exposure is estimated for each subject using spatial modelling from existing monitoring data. Genes of interest for regulation of inflammation and nitric oxide levels and for gene-environment interaction with air pollution will be genotyped. In statistical analyses interaction of these genes with air pollution exposure is investigated.
The project can indicate how genetic background influences air pollution susceptibility on a population level important for preventive work. The project focus on genetic epidemiology and public health and the PhD student will cooperate with researchers in these fields. Some genetic laboratory work may also be included.
The project is part of the multidisciplinary graduate school Miljö och Hälsa (Environment and Health) coordinated by Centre for Environment and Sustainability at University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology. Terms of employment: two years of "utbildningsbidrag" and two years of "doktorandanställning" is guaranteed as PhD student.
Desired background: master degree in chemistry, biology or bioinformatics or a medical degree.
