Governance Systems for Smart Greenspace
Description:
Nordic cities have qualities to draw on when it comes to greenspace, social inclusion and public health. But they are also segregated, characterized by health-related divides and by differences in accessibility to urban amenities. Without careful consideration the health and well-being of city-dwellers can be negatively influenced in overly densified and congested cities, despite sustainability ambitions. This PhD position is a part of a larger Nordic research project (Smart Planning for Healthy and Green Nordic Cities) which aims to support integrated planning efforts for urban sustainability by developing and implementing smart planning and management solutions for well-designed, high-quality greenspace that promote equity, health and wellbeing. Specifically, this PhD position will address planning practice through policies, decision making structures, key stakeholders' narratives and greenspace design.
The study (Governance Systems for Smart Greenspace) will be primarily based on qualitative empirical material based on 6 Nordic case cities participating in the project. Data includes (i) mapping of key actors, policies and governance structures in each partner city, both at the city-wide strategic level and at a more detailed development project level, (ii) interviews and desk studies of actors, policies and strategies using the mosaic governance approach, and (iii) the development and testing of smart processes and tools for planning and managing high-quality, health-promoting greenspace. The study will be partly based on results from other work packages, which will be embedded in an understanding of systems and processes in which smart planning and management of public greenspace takes place.
The PhD position will be located at SLU, Alnarp, but will be intensively linked to other project partners and specifically the project coordinator Nordregio. The project is financed by NordForsk.
