BACKGROUND
We seek a PhD student in the research field of Wood Technology at LTU in Skellefteå. The PhD student will work in projects related to the field of wood technology with focus on wood machining processes.

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION
Wood Technology includes multi-disciplinary research on wood material and industrial processes in the chain from forest to finished wood product. The research areas are wood material anatomy, wood physics, wood chemistry and wood mechanics, as well as wood machining, wood processing and product development, manufacturing, process optimization and visualization.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project that is now to be manned means that the PhD candidate should in cooperation with industrial partners conduct simulations and tests of the mechanical and physical behavior of wood material and wood cutting tools. Also evaluate test results from experiments in laboratory or in industry. Simulations are conducted by numerical computer modeling, e.g. with FEM. The background to the project is that wood machining processes (such as sawing and planning) are very important for sawmills and carpentry industries. To refine existing and develop new wood machining tools and processes are therefore of outmost importance.

TASKS
The research area is largely of multi-disciplinary and applied character and includes areas such as simulation techniques, measurement techniques, materials science and applied industrial issues. How different technical solutions can be adapted to meet the technical requirements, market demand and design of production equipment may be included in the work.

The position is unique and will lead to skills which are of high value and also give researchers the opportunity to work at LTU as well as in the organizations and businesses that we work with. The work is planned to start in 2019.

The position includes a fulltime fixed term employment for 4 years. The position may include departmental duties (such as administration and/or teaching) with up to 20% of full-time employment.

QUALIFICATIONS
We are seeking a talented and motivated colleague who can both independently and in collaboration with colleagues conduct advanced research in our research group.

General admission to doctoral level studies has a person that has: 1) a degree at advanced level, e.g. masters degree in mechanical engineering or similar 2) have completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, including 60 credits at advanced level, or 3) in any other way in Sweden or abroad acquired substantially equivalent merits.

The candidate is expected to complete doctoral studies with full time work in connection with the described project. LTU undertakes to provide excellent working conditions, active support from a qualified tutor group, and present proposals for doctoral training, which should lead to a doctoral degree in Wood Technology. The applicant must have a clear interest and merits in mechanics, calculations, computer simulations and customary engineering issues. Active participation in the international research community in the field will be rewarded. The applicant must be a good team player with good knowledge of english. Knowledge of swedish language is not a requirement for the service, but the applicant should be prepared to learn swedish in a few years.

Balancing of criteria
Selection among applicants who meet the eligibility requirements should be made with regard to the ability to benefit from research studies and curriculum vitae. Applicants must also be able to work well with teachers and student groups, social skills and flexibility are important qualities.
