This project is housed at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering at Luleå University of Technology, the Urban Water Research Group and aims at investigating small flexible sanitation solutions.

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION

Urban Water Engineering encompasses the entire urban water system (stormwater, drinking water and wastewater) with regard to collection, transport and treatment, as well as organisation and planning. Our research aims to encourage a good economy, clean environment and the efficient use of resources, while preserving public health and safety.

The Urban Water Research Group has a strong position in research and education within the area of urban water systems mainly in the areas of stormwater, wastewater and sewer systems. The group's overall aim is to contribute to the development of sustainable urban water systems. Being a part of the Urban Water Research Group implies working in an international and creative environment. The group consists of a number of senior researchers, Swedish and international adjunct professors and about ten doctoral candidates. The group has an extensive national and international collaboration network.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Current centralised sanitation in developed countries using end-of-pipe technology is inflexible due to large investment costs for treatment plants and pipe networks. Decentralisation and source separation have been identified as a major area of sustainable sanitation. Flexible decentralised solutions are needed when (parts of) the current sanitation systems need to change, e.g. due to urbanisation, de-population or ageing infrastructure. System changes can also consist in the reuse of treated wastewater and the introduction of more sustainable solutions such as water-saving appliances, or source-separating systems in one part of a city. Although the flexibility of decentralised systems can have practical value in many places, the current strategy pursued by Swedish municipalities is often centralisation. Source-separating systems are rarely applied despite their potential for nutrient recovery. In this PhD project sanitation systems of small communities (5 to 2000 pe) will be evaluated with regard to their sustainability and resilience. Various common system technologies will be compared with each other and with decentralised and/or source separating solutions using i.a. multi-criteria analysis.

DUTIES

The PhD candidate is expected to independently plan and carry out his/her studies. Further tasks include the writing of scientific papers and the doctoral thesis as well as the participation in Swedish and international conferences. Third-cycle education also includes courses that the PhD candidate is obliged to attend. The PhD studies are 4 years, fulltime. Administration and/or lecturing on basic and advanced level of up to one year may be added to this time.

QUALIFICATIONS

The applicant shall hold a second-cycle degree (MSc, fully completed course requirements of at least 240 ETCS of which at least 60 ETCS at an advanced level, or equivalent) in environmental/civil engineering or comparable. English language skills are required to facilitate the candidate's presentation of research outcomes at international conferences and in scientific journals. Further skills needed are the ability to work independently and take own initiatives as well as independently penetrate new research areas. Experience and/or education in the field of sanitary/urban water engineering, statistical data analysis as well as Swedish language skills are beneficial. It is preferable if the applicant holds a driving license and can start working with us soon. The applicant should be able provide contact details of two referees on request.
