PhD position in Scientific Computing
Are you interested in the interplay between mathematics, numerical analysis, and computer programming in order to solve hard problems that involve the intricate mechanics of waves and fluids?
The Department of Computing Science invites applicants for a PhD position (doktorandtjänst) in Scientific Computing focused on computational design, that is, the problem of designing devices with a prescribed set of properties using computer simulations coupled with numerical optimization algorithms. The research will be conducted jointly with researchers in a group under formation at the department and with our national and international collaborators.
A PhD position (doktorandanställning) involves primarily doctoral research and course work (forskarutbildning). The employment extends over a period of four years, provided that expected study and research results are achieved. The position may also include part-time work (20%) as teaching assistant. If so, the total time of employment is extended accordingly (up to maximum five years).
The Department of Computing Science has approximately 70 employees including 15 PhD students. Research at the department is conducted within a broad spectrum of topics, motivated by both fundamental questions and application needs. Please refer to www.cs.umu.se/index_eng.html for more information.
Eligible candidates are required to hold a MSc degree in a field relevant for the position. MSc students soon to complete their theses may also be considered. A solid background is desirable in at least two of the fields Computer Science, Numerical Analysis, Mathematics, and Physics (particularly the mechanics of waves or fluids). Good communication skills in written and spoken English are also required.
The application can be submitted either electronically or in paper form and should contain:
A cover letter including short description of your research interests,
A curriculum vitae,
Copies of degree certificates,
Reprints / copies of Bachelors / Masters thesis, and other relevant publications, if any
Contact information for three reference persons.
The recruitment procedure will follow the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen Chapters 5 and 7).
For further information about the position, please contact professor Martin Berggren, phone +46-(0)70 732 81 11, martin.berggren@cs.umu.se .
