Profession: PhD position in odontological science-Role of neutrophils in periodontal disease
Reference number: UR 2016/246. Project title:Life and death of neutrophils in the oral cavity - in health and periodontal disease. Job assignments: Neutrophil granulocytes are key effector cells of inflammation with the ability to kill and neutralize microbial invaders and are thus a crucial part of our immune defense. If, however, the activity of these cells is not properly regulated they also have the potential to cause severe damage to host cells and tissues. One prominent example of such inflammatory tissue destruction is periodontitis, loss of teeth due to damage to the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth, a disease affecting roughly 40% of the adult population in Sweden. Neutrophils are of main importance after leaving the blood and transmigrating to the inflamed tissues, yet surprisingly little is known about how human neutrophils change upon tissue recruitment. In particular, how human neutrophils behave in inflamed tooth pockets is rather uncharted territory. The proposed PhD project will characterize the recruitment, function and eventual death of neutrophils in the ora l cavity (in health and periodontal disease), and explore how factors secreted by oral microbes affect these processes. The project will use methods and concepts based in advanced cell biology/immunology combined with in vivo material from defined patients with periodontal diseases. The research group consists of basic experimental scientists as well as clinicians (dentists and medical doctors), all focusing on the inflammatory process and different types of inflammatory diseases.
