As decentralized applications built on blockchain and distributed ledger technologies become more widespread, they introduce new and understudied attack surfaces. The research aims to uncover novel network-based threats targeting these systems and to develop robust countermeasures. By systematically identifying vulnerabilities and proposing effective defenses, the project seeks to make the next generation of the Internet more secure, resilient, and trustworthy.
About us
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is highly international, with around 300 employees from over 30 countries. It is a fully integrated department, jointly operated by Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg. The position is placed in the Division for Computer Networks and Systems and is formally employed by Chalmers University of Technology.
Our research spans from theoretical computer science to applied systems development. We offer high-quality education at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, delivering over 120 courses annually. The department maintains extensive collaborations with academia, industry, and society, both nationally and internationally.
The PhD position is hosted in the Secura Lab, led by Assistant Professor Muoi Tran. Dedicated to advancing network security, Secura Lab develops innovative solutions to protect modern digital infrastructure from emerging network threats. Despite its young age, the lab has an excellent track record of publications in top-tier security and blockchain conferences. At Secura Lab, we believe that a healthy work-life balance is key to research excellence. Please visit our website for a letter to prospective PhD students.
About the research project
The PhD position centers on investigating network security challenges in Web3 environments. Web3 marks a shift toward decentralized applications underpinned by blockchain and distributed ledger technologies. This project will explore techniques to secure these systems against novel network-level attacks. Key objectives include developing secure communication protocols, analyzing vulnerabilities in peer-to-peer and consensus mechanisms, and designing scalable defense strategies that uphold privacy and security guarantees. The candidate will work at the intersection of systems, networking, and security, contributing both theoretical insights and practical tools to improve the resilience of decentralized infrastructures.
