The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 37 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The University of Gothenburg promotes equal opportunities, equality and diversity.

Project description
We welcome applicants with a strong interest in mixture ecotoxicology with emphasis on ecology and biodiversity. The PhD student will work within the FORMAS project CopeMix, a project on effects of low concentration mixtures over generations of copepod communities.

The project falls under the framework of the Centre for Future Chemical Risk Assessment and Management (FRAM) (www.fram.gu.se), a multi-disciplinary academic centre focusing on chemical mixtures. The Centre enables collaboration among researchers in the area of chemical risk assessment and management in Gothenburg, and cuts across academic disciplines and in close collaboration with stakeholders from chemical regulation, chemical industry and civil society.

The PhD project focus on effects of mixture toxicity on marine aquatic communities, primarily through ecotoxicological experimental work with natural zooplankton communities, including population genetics. The aim of the project, apart from providing a general scientific education, is to assess potential ecological impact of mixtures where the respective concentrations of the individual components are too low to cause effects.
The PhD candidate also stands to gain a broader understanding of chemical mixtures from a societal perspective and how to communicate science outside her/his own discipline as FRAM is a collaboration across departments and disciplines.

Job assignments
The main task is to conduct the PhD thesis work under supervision, which includes development of the PhD student's methodology experience, analytical skills, and theoretical depth and breadth. The specific research topic is ecotoxicology, with emphasis on ecology and biodiversity. Techniques used within the project include experimental systems for marine aquatic communities, microscopy, digitalisation, techniques for field sampling, short- and long-term tests with aquatic communities, and molecular techniques for population genetics and species identification. The experimental studies will take place at the Lovén Centre Kristineberg, for periods varying between weeks and months. The PhD candidate will work both independently and in close cooperation with other students, researchers and technicians, within and between disciplines.

Eligibility
To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements. A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he/she:
1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or
3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

To meet the specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies, applicants must:
1. have a second-cycle (advanced-level) degree in a relevant* subject area in the natural sciences, or
2. have completed studies for at least 60 higher education credits at a second-cycle level in relevant subject areas in the natural sciences, or
3. have completed a corresponding programme of relevance to the planned third-cycle programme, in Sweden or in another country, or have equivalent qualifications.
• Relevant subjects for the planned third-cycle education are ecotoxicology, plankton ecology and genetics

Assessments
Rules regarding education and employment on a doctoral level you will find in Högskoleförordningen (HF, SFS 1993:100). Only applicants who are admitted to the postgraduate level may be hired. Upon appointment the degree of ability to successfully complete the PhD program must firstly be evaluated.

The candidates' applications will be assessed based on the following criteria:
Specialisation within Ecotoxicology and experience with experimental systems for communities is strongly advantageous, and other specialisations within ecotoxicology such as plankton ecology and genetics are advantageous. Undergraduate and graduate studies in subjects related to ecology, biodiversity, toxicology, chemistry and molecular biology are beneficial. Excellent communication skills, written and spoken, in English are necessary since we work in an international environment. Experience and skills of working in collaborations are advantageous. Driving license is not necessary, but beneficial.
