In order to be approved for MSCA financing the applicant, at the time for the application, should not
have resided in Sweden more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.
Moreover the applicant must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of
their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.
Project description
In this PhD project, the chronic toxicity of microplastics (MP) in fish will be investigated with a focus on metabolism and general stress in laboratory experiments. Several ecologically relevant fish species may be used, all of which have well-known physiology and genetics: stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), perch (Perca fluviatilis), or brown trout or rainbow trout (Salmo trutta and Oncorhynchus mykiss). The candidate will assess the toxicity of biodegradable and conventional MP polymers. The endpoints will focus on life cycle parameters (growth, condition factor, RNA/DNA, reproduction), metabolism (energy storage, lipids, and lipid classes), stress (stress proteins, hormones, oxidative stress), and behavior endpoints (prey capture and predator avoidance). Proteomics will be considered to gain further insights into altered metabolism or mechanisms. Fish species with different feeding strategies and/or also different life-stages (larval, juvenile, adult) will be considered for the study of MP uptake to obtain a picture of species sensitivities and vulnerabilities under real conditions. Biodegradable and conventional MP polymers will be compared. In addition, the toxicity of leachates from conventional and biodegradable polymers will be tested in vivo, using acute fish toxicity testing, and in vitro, in fish embryos or fish cell cultures (e.g. rainbow trout gut cell line and liver cell line, RTL-W1). The candidate will complete a 6 month secondment at the polymer chemistry of biodegradable polymers at Universität Bayreuth (UBT), Bayreuth, Germany.
This PhD position is one of 15 positions within a Marie Skodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network. "LimnoPlast - Microplastics in Europe's freshwater ecosystems: From sources to solutions" is funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme (Marie Skodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Network) and offers 15 fully funded PhD positions (for early-stage researcher (ESR)) with an attractive stipend, complementary training activities and generous travel, laboratory and research budgets. The successful candidates will be hosted by a member of a European Consortium of universities, research institutions and companies in Germany, Denmark, France, Slovenia, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom and The Netherlands. Successful candidates will have a natural, environmental, technical or social-science based research interests and will participate in a transdisciplinary network of research and training aimed at accelerating the start of the applicants' scientific career.
LimnoPlast will for the first time bring together environmental, technical, and social sciences with the vision to transform a new understanding of freshwater microplastics to innovative solutions.
