PhD position in medical science-Two sub-projects with advanced genomic methods
Reference number: UR 2016/245. Project title:Advanced genomic methods for investigation of early-growth phenotypes. Job assignments: We have envisioned two sub-projects that will employ advanced techniques to utilise the information in a large genotyping dataset that often remains unexplored due to methodological challenges. The first subproject investigates structural variants in the genome (insertions, deletions, copy-number variants) and their impact on early growth phenotypes, such as gestational age and birth weight. The PhD candidate will take advantage of a very large array-genotyping dataset from which he/she will have to infer unobserved structural variants. Knowledge in general molecular genetics, statistics and programming will be required to investigate associations between inferred structural variants and the phenotype. The second subproject concerns genetic associations with the phenotype that arise due to alleles inherited from a specific parent, in contrast to standard GWAS where the total dosage of the allele is treated as a risk factor. The PhD candidate will use family trio data and custom-built statistical tools to infer haplotypes (genome segments that were transmitted to the child by mother and by father). Moreover, programming skills necessary to create a new algorithm will be required, as currently there is no available software that detects parent-of-origin specific associations.
Eligibility: To be admitted to third-cycle studies you must fulfill both the general and the specific entry requirements. The general entry requirements is fulfilled if you have: 1. completed a degree at a second-cycle level, or 2. completed at least 240 credits worth of studies of which at least 60 credits must be at a second-cycle level, or 3. acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. The specific entry requirements is fulfilled if you have completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies.
