Description
A PhD position is available within the Applied Analysis Group at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Karlstad University.
The Applied Analysis Group focusses on multiscale modeling, mathematical analysis and simulation of partial differential equations, kinetic theory, functional analysis, and computational number theory.
The PhD student will conduct research on interacting-particle systems (and corresponding hydrodynamic limit evolution equations) arising from the modeling of pedestrian dynamics. Typical research questions will refer either to the modeling and numerical simulation of the motion of interacting particles in domains with obstacles, to the development of a well-posedness and computability theory of measure-valued equations for interacting pedestrians, or to the convergence study of the involved discrete-to-continuous limits.
Eligibility
Eligible for this position are those candidates holding both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree (or equivalent degrees) in mathematics.
Knowledge or experience in one of the following areas would be very valuable: modeling and simulation (in MATLAB, Python, etc.) of particle systems and/or PDEs, numerical analysis of PDEs (e.g. SPH, FD, FEM, :), measure and approximation theory, mathematical analysis of transport equations.
Terms
The position is limited to 4 years, but can be prolonged for up to one more year if the PhD student also takes over other research, teaching or administrative tasks besides his PhD research. Those tasks should not exceed 20% of the time of a full-time position. The earliest date for filling the position is 1st June 2016.
