The PhD student will be hosted by RISE SICS Stockholm and will be enrolled in Uppsala University.

The computer science part of RISE, SICS, is at the forefront of ICT research and development. SICS performs applied ICT research, knowledge creation and innovation through the deployment of new services and products. Results are disseminated through our partnership or through test beds and demonstrators. SICS's collective expertise includes cybersecurity, machine learning, sensors and actuators, communication networks and data analytics to visualization, interaction design and service development.

The student will be placed in the SICS Security Lab that is among the largest public-sector cybersecurity research group in Sweden. Our core areas of expertise are: IoT Security, Cloud Security, Communication Security, Access Control, Privacy (technical and social aspects), and Secure Virtualization and Trusted Computing. The Security Lab is the European leader in IoT security research & development. The lab members are working on IoT security since 2009 and is currently running ten (10) IoT security projects.

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden's most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.

Project Description: Most network gateways support some firewalling functionalities to protect local networks against intrusions, by restricting ports/protocols/IP addresses based on specified policies. IoT devices can also be protected by removing network utilities such as shells, telnet, etc. Intrusion detection systems (IDS) can complement firewalls by analysing entire packets and detect known events. Recently, different antivirus companies started offering proprietary WiFi network scanners tailored for IoT devices, such as F- Secure SENSE, Bitdefender Box, and Norton's Core. Available solutions do not support novel IoT and security protocols. More importantly, they are not effective if vendors (insiders) themselves are malicious. Assume a user buys an off-the-shelf IoT device and install it in a smart home. There is no easy way to guarantee that vendors themselves are not malicious.

The project aims to advance the state-of-the-art in IoT threat intelligence. Through advanced deep learning, the project is expected to detect malicious IoT vendors in system of systems. Furthermore, the project is expected to enable seamless security-by-design such that DoS attacks can be mitigated.

Requirements: The candidate must have (at the time of the start of the project) a Master of Science degree in computer science or related areas relevant to the PhD project topics. Expertise and experience in cybersecurity, formal methods, and embedded systems will be significant part of the selection process. Excellent study results, in particular in mathematics subjects, good programming skills, good communication skills, good command of both spoken and written English, are required

Appointment period: The position is for four years but may be extended by lab duties (at most 20%). The PhD education also includes participation in relevant courses.
